Frugal Friday: Operation Christmas Child

Every year we get involved with Operation Christmas Child.  We have donated items for shoeboxes and we have also packed boxes as a family.  This year on Saturday 11/13/10 we will be packing boxes at a KLOVE Operation Christmas Child Packing Party (Christ Lutheran Church, Overland Park, KS).  There are Packing Parties across the country and you can go here to see if there is one near you.

There are some many ways to get involved as a family.  Check the Operation Christmas Child website for a list of ways you can help.  Most of the items we donate are from my drugstore stockpile.  In August I stock-up on FREE and/or super cheap school supplies and we also collect Happy Meal toys to donate.  Connor has enjoyed helping with Operation Christmas Child since he was only 2 years old!

Each box costs $7.00 to ship and so we donate $7 online for each box we pack as a family.  When you donate online you are able to track your boxes and you will receive an e-mail with the location of where your box was delivered.  I love this feature because we can then study this country and it is very exciting to know where our box was delivered.

If you are interested in helping with Operation Christmas Child visit their website for details & drop-off locations.

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me,...for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.

Matthew 19:14 (NIV)

Stamp Out Hunger Saturday 5/8

On May 8th, letter carriers in more than 10,000 communities will collect food items and deliver them to local food banks to help some of the millions of Americans, including an estimated 13 million children, who face hunger every day.

Since 1993, families have donated more than a half-billion pounds of food to Stamp Out Hunger. You can help make this year our most successful ever. Simply place bags filled with nonperishable food items like canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal and rice next to your mailbox on May 8th.

Your letter carrier will pick up the bags and deliver them to your local food bank.  Go here for more details.

Please do not include out-of-date items or those in glass containers.
