I love homemade bread! I rarely buy bread at the store. Homemade bread does not have all of the preservatives like store-bought bread so it does not last as long. To make your homemade bread last longer add 1 tablespoon of vinegar (any kind) per loaf to the liquid ingredients when you make bread. The vinegar will act as a natural preservative and mold retardant.

Wow! I had no idea...I will have to add it next time! Thanks for the great tip!
ReplyDeleteHow many days would you say this adds to the shelf life of your homemade bread? Does the vinegar change the bread's texture at all? :)

Wow, who knew? I'm going to try this. I also love homemade bread, but that last 'heel' usually ends up either as bird food or bread crumbs. I'd like to enjoy our bread 'the day after,' too!
ReplyDeleteTammy,
ReplyDeleteIt does not change the bread texture. The shelf life varies depending on weather (temperature, humidity, etc.) but I would say it probably adds 3-4 days.
Amy, can you taste it? I might try it, but we eat it up so fast that I'm not sure it's necessary for us!
ReplyDeleteMelanie,
ReplyDeleteNo, you can't taste the vinegar.
