Booking It in 2010
This year is our first official year homeschooling and I have been a little overwhelmed with curriculum & planning so I have not read any grown-up books this fall. We chose a literature based curriculum (Sonlight) since my son loves to read and so we have read several books together including Charlotte's Web, Mr. Popper's Penguins & Homer Price.
Even with a literature based curriculum my son, Connor, still does not have enough to read (He is a bookworm!) and so we have been supplementing with books from the library.
One of my favorite books we have read is Paddle to the Sea. When I was a child, my fourth grade teacher Mrs. Wilkinson read this book to our class and I absolutely loved it! I wanted to read it to Connor but I couldn't remember the title or author of the book. I did a search on Swagbucks for "children's book wooden indian canoe great lakes" and Paddle to the Sea was in the results. I knew it was the right book as soon as I saw the cover!
This is a wonderful story about an Indian boy that carves a wooden Indian in a canoe and names him Paddle to the Sea. He then sends him off to travel through the Great Lakes to the sea. The book not only has a great story but is also a Great Lakes geography lesson. The chapters are short and inlcudes beautiful illustrations and a map of Paddle to the Sea's journey. Kids of all ages would enjoy this book.

That sounds like an interesting read aloud that my son might enjoy too. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a fabulous read! I'm going to see if my library has it right now... thanks!
ReplyDeleteCheck out the other books by the same author as well. "Pagoo" is a favorite in our house.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I like to supplement our reading with books from the booklists at Living Books Curriculum. Like Sonlight, they have a high quality book selection. :)
Thanks Victoria! I am going to look for "Pagoo" at our library.
