Pumpkin Cake Pops

Last week I did some experimenting with making cake pops.  This was the first time I had ever made cake pops and the experiment was definitely a success!

You will need:
  • Cake Mix & the ingredients listed on the box (eggs, oil, etc.)
  • Frosting ( I used canned frosting this time because that is what all the recipes I found called for.  Next time, I might experiment with homemade frosting.)
  • Treat Sticks (available online or with the cake decorating supplies at craft stores like Hobby Lobby, JoAnn & Michaels)
  • Orange Candy Melts
  • Lime Green Candy Sixlets (I found these at JoAnn with the halloween candy/cake supplies but you could also use green tic-tacs, green gum drops or decorator icing.)
  • Clear Treat Bags & Twisty Ties or Ribbon

The day before you are going to make the cake pops, bake the cake according to the directions on the box.  Leave the cake out uncovered overnight.  You want the cake to "dry out" a little so it will be easier to make into balls.  Don't worry, your cake pops will not be dry.

Crumble the cake into a large bowl.  Make sure that it is "cake dust."  You do not want any large chunks or pieces.  Slowly add 1/2 - 3/4 can of frosting & mush together with your hands until you have a play-doh consistency.  Chill the mixture for 1-2 hours.

Once it has chilled for 1-2 hours roll the mixture into balls and place on a wax or parchment paper lined baking sheet.  Chill the balls in the freezer for at least 2 hours.

Once the balls have chilled in the freezer for at least 2 hours, melt the orange candy melts in a Wilton Chocolate Pro, small crockpot, double boiler or microwave.

Dip each treat stick in the melted orange candy melts and then place the sticks in the chilled cake balls.  This well help keep the cake balls from falling off the stick once they are dipped.

Dip the cake balls in the melted orange candy melts and make sure they are completely covered.  I found that it was easier to dip and then use a spoon to evenly spread the candy melts.  Immediately place the stem (green candy) on top of the cake ball and place the stick upright  in a styrofoam block to set.  I used a styrofoam block that was used as packing material in a package I received or you can buy a cake pop stand at a craft store.

Let the cake pops cool & set completely then cover with a treat bag and tie closed.

    3. A chocolate melting pot! Who knew? Do you know how many times my daughter and I made cake balls and they look so bad! We need a chocolate melting pot to dip them in. Great advice on dipping the stick in first. I told her about the pumpkins and I bet she makes them. Her blog is www.52mantels.blogspot.com and she recently made some candy apple cake balls. They are pretty cute.
