Preparing Mashed Potatoes Ahead for Thanksgiving Dinner

Making food ahead of time is a great way to save time and oven space on Thanksgiving Day.  Last weekend I prepared & froze 10 lbs. of mashed potatoes for our Thanksgiving Dinner.

First I washed & peeled the potatoes.  Then I placed them in the crockpot, covered them with water, added a little salt and let them cook on high for 6 hours.

When the potatoes were cooked, I put them in my Kitchen Aid mixer with butter, milk, salt, onion powder, garlic powder & white pepper.  I then whipped them until they were creamy & fluffy.

To freeze the mashed potatoes, I decided to put them in freezer bags so I could lay them flat in the freezer.  This works great if you have a small freezer or limited freezer space because the bags do not take up very much room.

The day before Thanksgiving, I will place the bags in the refrigerator to thaw.  On Thanksgiving Day, I will heat the mashed potatoes in a baking dish in the oven.  They also could be heated in a crockpot or on the stove.  If the mashed potatoes need to be thickened aftter thawing, just add some instant mashed potato flakes until they reach the consistency you like.

  • 1 can Mandarin Oranges (drained)
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon All Spice
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Cloves
  • 1/3 cup Walnut pieces (optional)

Add boiling water to gelatin according to package directions. Add the cinnamon, allspice & cloves and stir until completely dissolved. Add cold water according to gelatin package directions. Stir. Add in the whole cranberry sauce and stir until it is completely mixed in with the gelatin. Stir in the Mandarin oranges & walnut pieces (optional). Chill overnight or for at least 8 hours.

      Thanksgiving Appetizers

This year we have decided to have Thanksgiving Dinner at Plaza III . They offer a special meal with turkey and all the trimmings. We have reservations at 6:00 so that we will be able to watch the Plaza Lighting (for those of you that are not in Kansas City, the picture above is the Plaza lights) from inside. We are so excited about doing this!!

I realized that since we are having a late dinner, I will need to feed my family during the day. I have decided to do an appetizer buffet so that we can snack all day. We need to save room for turkey that evening! Here is what I will be serving on the Appetizer Buffet:

      Veggie Tray with Dip

      Meatballs with BBQ sauce

Sweet Pumpkin Dip with Graham Crackers & Apples for dipping

Leave a comment if you have any appetizer recipes to share!

      Start Purchasing for Thanksgiving Now!

I was reading Katie's Week in Review at Cincinnati Cents and she had a great and simple idea for Thanksgiving. Start purchasing food for Thanksgiving now. The sales are starting and will increase over the next few weeks. Most of us probably know what we need to prepare Thanksgiving Dinner so why not stock-up now? Buying early will help to spread the cost of Thanksgiving over several weeks instead of spending a lot of extra money during one week. It will also make sure that we get the best price on everything. I am trying something new this year. I am going to make up several dishes in advance and freeze them. This way on Thanksgiving I can just take them out of the freezer and bake. Hopefully this will be a time saver as well as make clean-up a little bit easier. I am going to freeze Sweet Potato Casserole, Mashed Potatoes & Green Bean Casserole. I will be sharing pictures & recipes as we get closer to Thanksgiving.

For more great frugal ideas visit Frugal Friday at Life as Mom.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
